A spitz the size of a cat
Pomeranians stand about 6 to 7 inches and weigh 3 to 7 pounds. A sturdy one lives 12 to 16 years. They descend from larger sled-type dogs and still act like it: bold, noisy, and unconvinced that a German shepherd outranks them. That mismatch is how small dogs get shaken.
They do well with older children and with dogs that will not swat them. Exercise is a half hour and a puzzle toy. The coat needs a comb that reaches the skin. Alopecia X, the coat disease that leaves a fuzzy tail and bald flanks, is a Pomeranian problem. It is cosmetic more often than it is sick, and a vet should say which.
Knees, throat, and a dental plan
Slipping kneecaps, dental disease, and tracheal collapse are the trio. A puppy that reverse-sneezes now and then is usually fine. A dog that coughs every time it is picked up is not. Open fontanelles occur. VCA describes collapsing trachea. A new honk after a pull on a collar is a reason to use the checker and book the clinic.
Pomeranian questions
Do Pomeranians shed?
Yes. The double coat blows seasonally. Brushing several times a week, and daily during the blow, keeps the undercoat off the furniture. Shaving the coat ruins the insulation.
What does a collapsing trachea sound like?
A honking cough, worse with excitement or a collar. Switch to a harness and have a vet listen. It is common in this breed and in other toys.
Are they good apartment dogs?
The exercise fits an apartment. The bark does not, unless you train a quiet. They alarm-bark at hallway noise.
