Six pounds and a full opinion

Chihuahuas stand about 5 to 8 inches and weigh 2 to 6 pounds. Many live 14 to 16 years, which is a long time for a dog that can hide a bad tooth. Smooth coats and long coats are the same breed. Apple-head and deer-head shapes show up in pet dogs. The apple head is the show style, and it is also the head that crowds teeth.

They often choose one person and treat the rest of the house as staff. Other dogs are a coin flip. A Chihuahua that has never met calm dogs will scream at them from a shoulder bag, and the bag teaches nothing. Short lessons, a crate that is a bedroom rather than a punishment, and a rule about whose lap is available will do more than another sweater.

Teeth, kneecaps, and temperature

Retained baby teeth, periodontal disease, slipping kneecaps, and a collapsing trachea are the ordinary medical list. Some puppies keep a soft spot on the skull. Dry that head gently. A yearly look in the mouth beats waiting for a face that smells. VCA's pet library covers luxating patella and dental disease in plain language. Limping that shows up after a jump belongs on the limping page.

Chihuahua questions

Are Chihuahuas good with small children?

Usually no. A dog this small is injured by a hug, a fall, or a stepped-on paw. Older children who sit down to visit do better than toddlers.

Why is my Chihuahua shaking?

Cold, excitement, and fear all cause a shiver. A tiny puppy that is weak, wobbly, and cold may have low blood sugar and needs a vet, not only a sweater.

How much walking do they need?

A couple of short walks and indoor play cover most adults. Training matters more than mileage, because barking and guarding the sofa become the default hobby.
