A genus that wants a desert, not a generic lizard tank
Uromastyx on a shop tag might be an ornate, a Mali, an Egyptian, or something rarer. Adult size spans about 10 to 30 inches. They commonly reach 15 to 25 years or more, and care is intermediate. All of them are dry, hot, herbivorous lizards with a spiked tail they swing. That shared plan is real. A single cage size still does not fit a 10-inch ornate and a large Egyptian equally well. The minimum listed is 4 by 2 by 2 feet. A big species needs more.
Basking surface temperature has to be genuinely hot, often well above 110°F and toward the 120s, inside the 80 to 130°F gradient. Measure the rock with a temperature gun. Humidity of 10 to 35 percent means no misting system and no soaked substrate. They dig. Slate and a deep dry dig box both get used. The diet is greens, seeds, and lentils, with calcium. Insects are not the staple. UVB is required.
One lizard, captive-bred
They are generally docile and still not a group pet. A tail whip is a defense, not a trick. Buy captive-bred and get the species name in writing. Wild-caught uromastyx arrive dehydrated and stay wild. A colorful adult male is territorial toward other males even through glass. Give them a visual barrier.
A uromastyx that stays cold, looks puffy, or stops eating greens is often a temperature or a humidity problem first. If fixing the bask does not fix the lizard, call a vet from ARAV.
Uromastyx questions
Which uromastyx is the common pet?
Ornate, Mali, and Egyptian uromastyx are the usual three, and they do not grow to the same size. Adults run 10 to 30 inches, because the genus is wide. Ask for the species.
Do they eat bugs?
They are herbivores. Lentils, seeds, and greens are the diet. A cricket habit is the wrong picture of this lizard, even if a baby snaps at a moving pellet.
How low should humidity be?
Aim for 10 to 35 percent. A damp tank causes respiratory and skin infections. Skip the mister. Give a hot, dry basking rock.
