Painted Turtle Habitat Essentials

Consistent environmental tracking and forward-leaning husbandry produce the outcomes that reactive care usually cannot.

The striped turtle in the stock tank

Painted turtles, Chrysemys picta, are the common basking turtles with red and yellow lines. Subspecies differ: eastern, midland, western, and southern. Shell length runs about 4 to 10 inches. Lifespan is 25 to 50 years. The care level is beginner among aquatic turtles, which means the pattern is well known, not that a bowl on a dresser is enough.

They swim, then they haul out and dry off. Water in the mid 70s to low 80s, a basking spot near 90°F, and UVB over that dock are fair temperatures. A filter has to keep up with a messy animal. Change water anyway. Gravel they can swallow is a bad floor. Bare bottom or large river rock is simpler.

Pellets, bugs, greens

Pellets, insects, and greens are the diet. Feed in the water, and pull leftovers. Calcium on the insects. Fatty feeder fish every day is how you get a vitamin problem. Salmonella is normal on healthy turtles. Wash hands, and keep the tank out of the kitchen. US rules generally ban the sale of turtles under a 4-inch shell for that reason.

Do not release a pet painted turtle. They are already native in much of the country, and dumped animals still move disease. A turtle that lists in the water or refuses food for several days needs a reptile vet. ARAV is the directory. The checker helps you decide how soon.

Painted turtle questions

How big is a painted turtle tank?

55 gallons or more. A hatchling in a 10-gallon bowl will outgrow it. Add swimming room, a filter rated well above the tank, and a dock that dries completely.

Can I sell or buy a tiny painted turtle?

In the United States, turtles with a shell under 4 inches generally cannot be sold as pets. The rule exists because small turtles spread Salmonella.

Do painted turtles need a heat lamp?

Yes. Water around 75 to 82°F, a basking spot near 90°F, and UVB are what the shell needs. A lamp-free tank grows soft shells.
