The shell looks like a river map
Map turtles are Graptemys, a genus of river turtles with fine yellow lines on the shell and, in some species, a keel that looks saw-toothed. Adults run 4 to 10 inches, because that range covers small males and larger females. Lifespan is about 15 to 25 years. Care is intermediate. A baby in a shop tank is a poor preview of an adult female that needs real swimming room.
They are aquatic baskers. Water around 75 to 85°F, a dock near 90°F, and UVB are the setup. Fifty-five gallons is a start, and a large female needs more. Filtration has to be stronger than the tank size suggests. They are shy. A tank in a loud hallway with no cover over one end produces a turtle that never basks.
Species, sex, and the law
Ouachita, false, Mississippi, and northern map turtles are common names in the trade, and several relatives are protected. Ask for the species, and buy captive-bred. Diet is pellets, insects, and vegetables, with calcium. Hard-shelled prey matters for some of the snail-eating species. The 4-inch sale rule in the United States applies here too: tiny shells are not a legal pet-shop product.
Shell rot shows up when the dock never dries or the water is filthy. A soft shell or a turtle that stops eating needs a clinic that sees chelonians. Start with ARAV.

Why is one map turtle huge and the other tiny?
Females of many Graptemys species are several times the bulk of males. A pair sold as matching babies will not stay matching, and adults should not be surprised by that.
Are map turtles a beginner turtle?
Care is intermediate. They are active, they bask, and they foul the water. Some species are also protected and should not be wild-caught.
What do map turtles eat?
Pellets, insects, and vegetables. Several species lean toward snails and other hard prey. Offer calcium. Skip a diet of only feeder goldfish.
