Jackson's Chameleon Habitat Essentials

With Jackson's Chameleon, Reliable environmental monitoring and disciplined husbandry are the foundation; without them, care plans drift into reactive mode..

Horns, and a cooler cage

Jackson's chameleons, Trioceros jacksonii, are the horned chameleons from East African highlands. Adults are about 9 to 13 inches. They commonly reach 5 to 10 years, and care is advanced. Males carry three horns. They give birth to live young rather than burying a clutch the way a veiled chameleon does. That is a species difference with a practical follow-up: a surprise litter if you housed a pair. Do not house a pair. They are solitary.

A screen cage about 2 by 2 by 4 feet, temperatures of 65 to 80°F, humidity of 50 to 80 percent with drying time, UVB, and a dripper or heavy mist are the setup. They drink moving water off leaves. A bowl is often ignored. Insects, calcium, and gut-loading are the diet. No fruit bowl will fix a dehydrated chameleon. A hot reptile room that is perfect for a bearded dragon is a bad room for this species.

Feral populations are a warning

Released Jackson's chameleons have established themselves in Hawaii. Do not ship your problem outdoors. Buy captive-bred. Wild-caught imports of chameleons crash. A chameleon on the cage floor, dull black for hours, or with sunken eyes needs a vet the same day. Do not wait it out. The not-eating page applies, and a reptile vet from ARAV is the person who can rehydrate one.

Jackson's chameleon questions

Do females have three horns?

Males of the common form do. Females usually have smaller horns or none. A horned male is not a different species. Babies are not miniature adults you can sex across the room on day one.

Why not use a veiled chameleon setup?

Jackson's chameleons want it cooler. Keep temperatures around 65 to 80°F. The hot basking spot that suits a veiled chameleon overheats a Jackson's.

Are they good pets?

Care is advanced. They are solitary, they stress easily, and the lifespan is often 5 to 10 years. They are a display animal for someone who already understands screen cages and gut-loaded insects.
