The green python on a perch
Green tree pythons are Morelia viridis. Adults are about 5 to 7 feet. Lifespan is 15 to 20 years. Care is advanced. They are a display animal, and they can bite. Both are the daily reality. The resting coil looks like an emerald tree boa and the animal is a python from a different ocean.
Locality matters. Aru, Sorong, Biak, and Cyclops animals differ in adult color, neonate color, and sometimes attitude. Babies of many lines are yellow or brick red and turn green. The cage is arboreal: perches, a vertical temperature gradient from the low 70s at the cool end toward the upper 80s, and humidity around 50 to 70 percent as listed, higher while shedding. The 2 by 2 by 3 foot minimum is a tight adult cage. Wider perches and more length help.
Rodents, tongs, and almost no handling
They eat mice and small rats. A strike from the perch is fast. Feed with tongs and give the snake the rest of the week in peace. Captive-bred locality animals are the ethical and the practical buy. Wild-caught imports do poorly. A python that never uses the perch, or that keeps a crust of shed on the tail, needs a setup change and maybe a vet.
Line up a clinic through ARAV before the bite or the respiratory infection, not after.
Green tree python questions
Are green tree pythons the same as emerald tree boas?
No. The posture looks similar. Green tree pythons are Morelia from New Guinea and nearby islands. Emerald tree boas are Corallus from South America. Heat, humidity, and the laws around them are not identical.
Why is my baby yellow or red?
Many localities hatch yellow or red and turn green. Biak, Aru, Sorong, and other lines do this on different schedules. A failed color change can also be illness, so watch weight and sheds.
Can I hold a green tree python?
They are a display animal that can bite. Holding is a rare chore, not the hobby. The teeth are long.
