Betta splendens is the long-finned fish from the shallow, planted waters of Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Adults are about 2.5 to 3 inches and often live 3 to 5 years. Males are aggressive toward other males. They are also attentive: many learn the person who feeds them and build bubble nests when the water suits them. Care level is easy only after the tank is cycled.
Five gallons, a heater, and bacteria
Minimum tank size is 5 gallons for one fish, and 10 is roomier. Keep the temperature between 76 and 82°F with an adjustable heater and a thermometer you actually look at. Use a filter with a gentle flow, a sponge filter or a baffled hang-on-back, so the fins are not blown across the tank. Cycle the filter before the fish arrives: ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate under 20 ppm, pH roughly 6.5 to 7.5. A lid matters because bettas jump.
Plants such as Anubias and Java fern, and a smooth hide, give a long-finned fish somewhere to rest. Skip sharp plastic ornaments. The wild habitat is a slow, vegetated floodplain, not a shot glass.
Carnivore food and the usual diseases
Feed a betta pellet or frozen foods such as brine shrimp and bloodworms, a few bites once or twice a day. Daphnia now and then helps a fish that is constipated. Uneaten food is ammonia. Fast a day if the belly looks pinched and the fish is still active; a pinecone belly and lethargy is a water-quality or infection problem, not a hunger strike.
Fin rot, ich (white specks, flashing), and swim-bladder trouble after overfeeding are the common trio. Fix the water before you stack medications. A quarantine container with a heater is how you avoid medicating a planted tank.
A reasonable setup, tank, heater, filter, and conditioner, often costs $60 to $150, plus the fish. The Merck Veterinary Manual covers fish disease if you want the clinical side, and an aquatic vet can be found through veterinary directories when a prized fish is worth more than a bottle of methylene blue. Gasping at the surface with clamped fins belongs on the fish gasping page. The checker is the urgency sort, and for fish it usually points you back at a water test.
Betta tanks, plainly
Can a betta live in a bowl?
A bowl concentrates ammonia and swings in temperature. Use at least 5 gallons with a gentle filter and a heater held around 78°F. The labyrinth organ lets a betta breathe air in low-oxygen water. It does not make ammonia safe.
How long do bettas live?
Often 3 to 5 years in a stable tank. Much shorter lives usually trace to cold water, uncycled bowls, or overfeeding.
Can two males share a tank?
No. Males fight. A female sorority is a separate, crowded, experienced-keeper project and not a starter plan.
What does fin rot look like?
Fin edges go pale, ragged, or black, and the tail gets shorter over days. Check ammonia and temperature first. Clean, warm water cures more fin rot than a bottle of medicine poured into a dirty bowl.
