People dog, dog-selective

Staffordshire Bull Terriers weigh about 24 to 38 pounds and stand 14 to 16 inches. Lifespan is often 12 to 14 years. They are muscular, affectionate with their own household, and frequently foolish in the best way with children. The failure mode is other dogs. Same-sex friction and poor dog-park judgment are common. Socialize hard, and still do not assume the greeting will go well. Exercise is high, 1 to 2 hours, of walks, tug with rules, and training. A bored Stafford is a strong Stafford with a hobby you did not choose.

The coat is short and cheap to wash. Skin allergies are not cheap. Insurance is listed higher than for a random small dog because claims happen.

A brain disease you can test

L-2-HGA causes neurological signs, and carriers should not be bred together. Hereditary cataracts cloud the lens and have their own DNA test. Ask to see both. Hips, cruciate tears, and heart disease show up as in other muscular breeds. Demodex and allergic skin disease make some of these dogs a dermatology project. A first seizure is not "the breed being intense."

A routine year often totals about $1,650 to $3,500. AKC's breed directory separates this dog from the American Staffordshire Terrier if the names have gotten muddy. A seizure or a collapse uses the checker. A limp uses the limping page.

Staffordshire Bull Terrier questions

Are Staffords safe with children?

They are often unusually good with people, including children who treat them fairly. That is not a license to leave a powerful jaw unsupervised, and it says nothing about how they will treat another dog.

What DNA tests are specific to Staffords?

L-2-hydroxyglutaric aciduria, a neurological disease, and hereditary cataracts. Both have tests. Hips and skin still need a conversation the swabs do not cover.

How are they different from an American Staffordshire Terrier?

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is the smaller British breed, about 14 to 16 inches. The American Staffordshire Terrier is a different breed and usually larger. Papers should say which one you are buying.
