A Cuban companion that wants company

Havanese stand about 8.5 to 11.5 inches and weigh 7 to 13 pounds. Many live 14 to 16 years. They were built to be underfoot. A workday alone in a crate is a sad plan for this breed, and it shows up as barking, as a mess, or as a dog that greets you like you returned from a war. Exercise is moderate: walks, tricks, and a play session.

They are generally good with children who are not rough, and good with other dogs. The coat is the daily tax. Tear staining and a dirty beard are housekeeping. A short "puppy cut" is how a lot of healthy Havanese actually live, and it is not a moral failure.

Eyes, ears, and a knee

Cataracts, cherry eye, and progressive retinal atrophy are reasons for a breeder eye exam, not a flashlight in the kitchen. Some lines carry deafness. A puppy that does not wake to a squeak needs a BAER test, not a theory that it is independent. Patellar luxation is the limp. VCA covers cataracts. A cloudy eye or a squint is a clinic visit, and the skin and eye irritation notes are a start while you wait.

Havanese questions

Do Havanese like other people?

Usually yes. They are a social toy breed and tend to wilt if left alone all day. A dog walker or a second person in the house matters more than a bigger crate.

How hard is the coat?

It is soft and it felts. Comb to the skin several times a week, or keep a short trim. A matted Havanese needs a shave and sometimes skin treatment.

Are they barky?

They alert. They are not a silent breed, and they are quieter than a terrier if someone teaches a thank-you-that-will-do.
