Bird dog energy in a friendly package

English springers are medium sporting dogs, about 19 to 20 inches and 40 to 50 pounds, with a lifespan often around 12 to 14 years. They want to be with people and they want to move. An obedience class without a long walk is half a plan. They are generally excellent with children and with other dogs, and they are still spaniels that put a muddy bird, or a muddy sock, in your lap.

Show lines and field lines share a name and not a Tuesday. If you hunt, buy from hunting people. If you want a calmer house dog, say that out loud to the breeder and meet the adult dogs, not only the puppies.

PFK, hips, and a wet ear

Ask for phosphofructokinase testing, hip scores, and an eye exam. Progressive retinal atrophy and hip dysplasia are the other reasons a cheap puppy gets expensive. Ear infections follow swimming and heavy leather. Dry the canals. Do not pour a random cleaner into an ear that already smells. VCA has an ear-infection overview. A springer that tires suddenly on a hunt and passes dark urine needs a clinic, not another loop of the field.

Springer spaniel questions

Is this the same dog as a Welsh springer?

No. Welsh springers are red and white and a different breed. English springers are the liver, black, or roan dogs most people mean by springer.

Should breeding dogs be PFK-tested?

Yes. Phosphofructokinase deficiency is inherited. A clear test on the parents is a reasonable question. Affected dogs can have muscle cramps and dark urine after hard exercise.

Do they need a groomer?

Feathering mats behind the ears and on the legs. A brush at home and a trim on a schedule keep the skin visible. A matted ear flap hides infection.
