A quiet cat with a full-time coat

Persians are the longhaired, flat-faced cat people picture on a cushion. Calm, affectionate, and soft-voiced is accurate. Activity is low. Shedding is very high. Grooming is a daily chore, not a personality trait you can skip because the cat seems mellow. Adults are often 7 to 12 pounds and live about 12 to 17 years if the kidneys, the teeth, and the airway cooperate.

The face is brachycephalic. Some cats breathe noisily, crowd their teeth, and overflow tears onto the face. A Persian that open-mouth breathes after mild play, or that snores itself awake, needs a vet, not a smaller pillow. Wipe the eye folds with a damp cloth so the skin does not ulcerate under the fur.

The comb is the care plan

Use a stainless comb and work in sections every day: belly, armpits, behind the ears, tail. Mats that are tight to the skin hurt, and scissors next to Persian skin cause lacerations. The cost card puts professional grooming at $600 to $1,200 a year, which is what daily home care is avoiding, or what you pay if you will not do it. Baths every few weeks help if the cat is introduced early. A matted cat's first bath is a clinic procedure.

Kidneys and the price of a pretty face

Polycystic kidney disease was widespread before DNA testing. Ask for the parents' PKD1 results. Even clear cats need senior bloodwork, because kidneys fail for other reasons too. Dental disease is common under a short muzzle. Brachycephalic airway trouble is less famous in cats than in French Bulldogs and still real.

Routine yearly cost is about $2,000 to $3,800, high for a cat because of the groomer and the face-care products. Buy from someone who will show you health tests, and keep the cat indoors. Heat plus a flat face is a bad afternoon on a balcony.

Persians suit quiet homes and people who find brushing pleasant. They do not suit travelers who want a self-cleaning pet, or families that want a fetch partner. The VCA pages on polycystic kidney disease are a clear summary. Eye pain and a cat that will not eat belong in the urgent pile; start with the checker if you are unsure, and read the not-eating guide before you wait a day.

Persian coat, face, and kidneys

How often do you brush a Persian?

Daily, with a comb that reaches the skin. Skipping a week is how a cat ends up sedated for a shave. The quick facts list grooming as very high for that reason.

What is polycystic kidney disease?

An inherited disease in which cysts replace kidney tissue over time. Reputable Persian breeders DNA-test for the PKD1 mutation. A kitten from untested parents can look perfect at 12 weeks and be in kidney failure years later.

Why are the eyes always wet?

The flat face often pairs with poor tear drainage, so staining is common. Sudden squinting, a swollen eye, or thick yellow discharge is infection or a corneal ulcer, not the usual drip.

Are they good with kids?

With gentle children, yes. They are calm and quiet and they do not enjoy being carried around like a stuffed animal. Rough handling and a flat face are a bad pair.
