The British Shorthair is the stocky grey cat from the postcards, though the breed comes in many colors. Calm, easy-going, and dignified is the right temperament line, and it means something specific: this cat often watches the room, accepts petting on its own schedule, and does not demand a conversation. Activity is low to moderate. Vocalization is low. They are usually good with children and other pets without being velcro.

Adults commonly weigh 9 to 18 pounds. Many live 12 to 20 years, and the wide band depends on weight and heart more than on coat color.

The plush coat hides the waist

The coat is dense and needs a weekly brush, more when it sheds in season. Grooming needs are low to moderate. The health problem owners create is fat. A broad chest already looks square, so a British Shorthair can be obese before anyone says the word. Feed measured meals. Use a scale or at least a monthly rib check. Diabetes and arthritis follow the extra pounds, and a heavy cat is harder to medicate later.

Play still matters. A short wand session and a puzzle feeder keep a low-activity cat from becoming a completely sedentary one. They are fine in apartments. They are not a breed that needs a leash-walk to stay sane, though some enjoy one.

Hearts and the yearly bill

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is the inherited concern. When you are choosing a kitten, ask what cardiac testing the parents had. For a pet already at home, mention any murmur, any sudden hind-leg weakness, or any open-mouth breathing immediately. Those hind-leg events can be a clot, and they are an emergency.

Routine yearly cost is in the neighborhood of $1,200 to $2,500 once you add food, litter, and mid-range insurance. The VCA library has a readable HCM page. This breed suits someone who wants a quiet, sturdy companion and will keep the food scoop honest. It bores people who wanted a Bengal. A cat that does not eat, or that seems painful when walking, should land on the not-eating guide or the checker the same day.

British Shorthair weight and temperament

Are British Shorthairs cuddly?

They are calm and loyal in a reserved way. Many like to be near you and not on you. Expect a dignified cat, not a Siamese running commentary.

How much do they weigh?

Often 9 to 18 pounds, with males heavier. The dense body hides weight gain. You should still feel ribs under the plush coat.

Do they shed?

Moderately, with a seasonal blow of the dense coat. A weekly brush handles most of it. They are not a hairless breed and not a Persian.

What should breeders test?

Hearts. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy occurs in the breed. A DNA panel is not a substitute for knowing how the parents' hearts looked on ultrasound.
