A ticked coat and a busy brain
Abyssinians weigh about 6 to 10 pounds and often live 12 to 15 years. The coat is ticked, not spotted, though the ruddy color reads as a wild pattern in photographs. Activity is very high. They want vertical space, a second play session after dinner, and a person who thinks that is fun. Somali cats are the longhaired relative and share some of the same diseases. They are usually fine with older children and with other pets if the pets can tolerate a game. A shy, low-energy Aby is a reason to ask what is wrong, not a lucky quiet one.
Retina, red cells, and kidneys
Ask for rdAc PRA and pyruvate kinase deficiency DNA tests on the parents. Renal amyloidosis causes kidney failure that shows up as weight loss and drinking more. Patellar luxation makes some of them skip. Merck covers progressive retinal atrophy. A cat that misses the counter it used to reach is an eye or a joint question for the clinic, and appetite loss is the not-eating guide.

Do Abyssinians settle down?
They play hard for years. A home that wants a pillow cat will feel bullied by a cat that opens doors and steals hair ties. Give the climbing, or the climbing will be your shelves.
What eye disease do they carry?
Progressive retinal atrophy from the rdAc mutation, and it is a DNA test. A cat that starts missing jumps in dim light needs an eye exam, not more lamps as the whole plan.
Are they vocal?
Moderately. They chirp and comment. They are not the Siamese broadcast, and they are not silent.
