Nine species, one pet-shop word

Lovebirds are Agapornis, nine species from Africa and Madagascar. Common pets land around 5 to 7 inches, 10 to 15 years, and up to 20 with excellent care. Peach-faced lovebirds are the common one and often outlive that 10-to-15 band. Fischer's and masked lovebirds are the other two you will see. Care is beginner to intermediate. Noise is moderate: frequent chirps and a loud flock call.

A cage of at least 24 by 18 by 24 inches is a start, and it should be wider if more than one bird lives there. Pellets, vegetables, and a seed mix are the diet. They shred paper into nests even when you did not offer a box. That weaving is the genus. It becomes a problem when a bird guards the nest and bites. One bird with a person, or a true pair of the same species, are the stable setups. A spare lovebird added so the first will not be lonely can start a fight.

Small birds, fast emergencies

They hide illness until they sit on the floor. Weight is the check you can do on a gram scale. A drop is a reason to call a clinic from AAV instead of offering a new millet spray and waiting. The quiet bird page describes that posture.

Lovebird questions

Which lovebird should I buy?

Peach-faced lovebirds are the usual pet and have their own page. Fischer's, masked, and black-cheeked lovebirds are different species. This page covers the genus at 5 to 7 inches.

Can I keep two species together?

Do not hybridize them on purpose. Different Agapornis species can fight or produce crosses the hobby does not need. One species per cage if you keep a pair.

Do they talk?

Rarely. Some learn a few words. Buy a lovebird for the company and the noise, not for speech.
