The largest parrot is still a parrot

Hyacinth macaws, Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus, are about 39 to 40 inches and 2.6 to 3.7 pounds. Fifty to sixty years is the working lifespan, and older birds exist. Noise is a deep shout that carries. Talking is moderate. Care is expert. The diet is built around nuts, especially hard palm nuts in the wild, and in a house it is a measured nut ration plus pellets, vegetables, and fruit. A bowl of walnuts as the whole menu is how a hyacinth gets fat and short of nutrients.

The enclosure is custom. A living-room cage sold for a blue-and-gold is a toy. They destroy furniture with the beak that opens macadamia nuts. Plan the room, the second caregiver, and the will.

Paperwork and a clinic that will see a bird this size

CITES paperwork should exist for a legal bird. Ask an avian vet, found through AAV, whether they can hospitalize a hyacinth before you need that answer at 9 p.m. A quiet, fluffed macaw is the quiet bird page scaled up to an emergency you cannot lift alone.

Hyacinth macaw questions

How big is the commitment?

A bird that can outlive you, a custom enclosure, and a yearly food bill that can run to several thousand dollars in nuts and pellets. If that sentence feels abstract, you are not ready.

Are they gentle because they are expensive?

Some are affectionate. The beak can crush. Price does not select for a safe parrot. Hormonal hyacinths bite the person they loved in March.

Are wild hyacinths pets?

They are endangered. A legal pet is captive-bred, with paperwork. A bargain hyacinth is a smuggling story or a sick bird.

Appendix I, and a beak built for palm nuts

Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus is on CITES Appendix I and is native to Brazil, Bolivia, and Paraguay, including the Pantanal. The beak is built to crack hard palm nuts such as Acrocomia and Attalea. In a house the diet is a measured nut ration plus pellets, vegetables, and fruit, worked out with an avian veterinarian, because a bowl of walnuts alone misses that balance and fattens a bird of 2.6 to 3.7 pounds. Adults are about 39 to 40 inches, with working lives of 50 to 60 years and older birds on record. Legal pets are captive-bred and come with paperwork. The enclosure has to be built for this beak. A cage marketed for a smaller macaw is a toy at 39 inches.
