A hen is a small farm animal

Chickens in a backyard are usually laying hens. They commonly reach 5 to 10 years, the noise is moderate, care is beginner, and a 24-inch cube is only a minimum. Beginner fits a person who will build a coop. The cube does not. A hen needs room to walk, a perch, a nest box, and dirt or litter to scratch. A rooster crows. Many city rules allow hens and forbid roosters. Know which chicks you bought, or be ready for half of a straight-run box to be males.

Kitchen scraps are a snack. A diet of only corn or only treats makes weak eggs and weak birds. Clean water matters more than a decorative feeder. Eggs are food. Wash hands after the coop. Salmonella is ordinary on healthy poultry and still a kitchen problem.

Predators, winter, and a vet who sees birds

Raccoons and dogs are the usual way a backyard flock ends. Hardware cloth, not chicken wire alone, and a closed coop at night are the fix. A bird that sits fluffed, stops eating, or breathes with an open beak needs a veterinarian. Many dog-and-cat clinics do not see chickens. Ask before you need them. AAV is a place to look, and the quiet bird page describes the sick posture.

Chicken questions

Can a chicken live in a small cage?

Give them 24 by 24 by 24 inches as a minimum. That is a carrier, not a life. A hen needs a coop, a nest box, and outdoor space or a large secure run.

Are roosters allowed?

Often no. Many cities allow a few hens and ban roosters because of the noise. Check the ordinance before a straight-run chick grows into a male you cannot keep.

How long do chickens live?

Egg laying slows well before that. The hen still needs care after the eggs taper off.

Marek's disease is a flock decision

Marek's disease is a herpesvirus of chickens that spreads in feather dander, and the Merck Veterinary Manual is the clinical write-up. Vaccination is a prevention decision for birds that are still well, made by a poultry veterinarian, and this profile lists no dose. A hen that is already fluffed and down needs an exam. Many dog-and-cat clinics decline poultry, so the poultry contact goes on the fridge before the first sick morning. Layer feed, greens, and a coop closed with hardware cloth at night are the daily structure. The 24 inch cube in the quick facts is a holding box. A laying hen's housing is the coop, the perch, the nest, and a run.

Layer feed is the diet, plus greens and the insects they find.
