Recommended for Campbell's Dwarf Hamsters
Size and temperament
Campbell's dwarf hamsters weigh about 1 to 2 ounces and live about 1.5 to 2 years. They are nocturnal. A cage of at least 450 square inches of floor is the start, with a wheel that does not bend the back. They bite when startled. That bite is ordinary for a startled hamster. Scolding does not change it.
House them alone unless you already know how you will separate a fight. Hybrids with winter whites are common in pet shops. The cross does not make a tougher hamster. It muddles which species you bought. Feed a pellet, a little fresh food, and almost no sugary treats.
Thirst, teeth, and diarrhea
Constant drinking can be diabetes. Diarrhea dehydrates a one-ounce animal in hours. Overgrown teeth make a hamster pouch food and starve. ASPCA small-pet pages are the overview. A Campbell's that looks hunched and cold needs warmth on the way to a clinic, and the not-eating page if the food is still full.
A steppe hamster that pet shops rename
Phodopus campbelli is Campbell's dwarf hamster, from dry steppe and semi-desert across Mongolia, northern China, Kazakhstan, and southern Russia. The winter white, Phodopus sungorus, is the cousin that can molt pale when the days shorten. Campbell's stay stockier and usually keep a dorsal stripe. Pet shops label both "djungarian," "Russian," or "dwarf," and they sell hybrids. A hybrid does not live longer or stay healthier. It is a hamster whose parents were two species, and the diabetes risk the questions mention is part of why that mix is a poor bargain. The 1 to 2 ounce size and the 1.5 to 2 year life on the table are the adult animal.
Cage size
The quick-facts floor is 450 square inches. A 40-gallon breeder is about 650 and is the tank that actually fits an 8-inch upright solid wheel, a sand bath, a hide, and several inches of bedding without stacking the hamster against the lid. Bar spacing at or under a quarter inch, or a tank with a locking mesh top. They squeeze through hamster "starter" cages sold beside the animal. Paper or aspen bedding, never cedar. Keep a dish of chinchilla sand in the cage so they can clean the coat the way a steppe animal does. Do not use dust. Dump the sand when it is wet. Room temperature about 65 to 75°F. Cooler than that, a Campbell's may try to torpor. A cold, limp hamster needs warmth on the way to a clinic the same hour. Do not treat it as hibernation.
Diet
A fortified hamster pellet, about a teaspoon a day, is the meal. A few pieces of plain seed mixed in are fine. Sugary yogurt drops, honey sticks, and a bowl of fruit leave a diabetes-prone hamster sticky and thirsty. Fresh food means a thumbnail of broccoli, cucumber, or herb, a few times a week, removed if it is still there in the morning. Protein comes from the pellet and, once in a while, a single mealworm. A water bottle, checked, because dwarfs are small enough that an empty sipper matters by evening. The opening already says almost no sugary treats. The teaspoon is the amount that sentence was missing.
Diabetes, wet tail, and teeth
A hamster that drains the bottle, soaks the sand, and loses weight may be diabetic. That is a veterinary visit and a diet change the same day. Do not copy an insulin dose from a dog. Wet tail, the foul watery diarrhea of hamsters, kills quickly. A hunched dwarf with a wet rear end needs a clinic now. Leave the reptile-aisle probiotic on the shelf. Cheek pouches impacted with sticky food look like a lopsided face. Overgrown incisors make a hamster pouch food and starve in front of a full dish. Mites and ringworm show up as fur loss. Wash your hands. Some skin fungi move to people. The not-eating page is the decision tree if the pellet is untouched, and ASPCA's pet-care pages stay the general overview already linked above. No antibiotic left over from a cat.
Handling
They bite when a hand arrives during sleep. That is ordinary. Sit at the cage in the evening and let the hamster step onto a flat palm over a towel, close to the ground, because a jump from a high hand can injure it. Scruffing a dwarf to show a child gets you bitten, and the hamster learns that hands are traps. They do not need baths. The sand does that job. A wet hamster loses heat.
Exercise
The upright solid wheel is the exercise. A saucer that bends the back, and any wire wheel, injure feet and spines. A jam jar of bedding they can kick, willow chews, and a multi-room hide are the rest. An exercise ball is a no. Out-of-cage time on a bathroom floor ends with a hamster in the wall. The cage has to be interesting enough that you do not need a ball.
Prices in October 2026
Budget, for a US buyer in October 2026, about $50 to $140 for a 40-gallon breeder or a bin of that floor plus a lid and an 8-inch wheel. Bedding is roughly $10 to $18 a month if you keep it deep. Food and a bag of sand are under $15. The hamster is often $15 to $40. An exotic exam commonly runs $80 to $180 before tests. The animal will be old at two. Paying for the vet once is still cheaper than replacing a hamster you lost to a $15 wire cage.
Phodopus in California, hamsters in Hawaii
Title 14 of the California Code of Regulations, section 671, says domesticated dwarf hamsters of the genus Phodopus are not restricted. Fish and Game Code section 2118, as posted by the legislature, names Syrian hamsters in the rodent exception and does not repeat the dwarf line. That mismatch is why you ask the Department of Fish and Wildlife before you drive a Campbell's into California, instead of trusting a forum. Hawaii prohibits hamsters for private possession. The list is on the Department of Agriculture animal guidelines. Most other states allow them. A lease can ban rodents even when the state does not.
Suitability
The table says beginner and solitary preferred. A beginner who is awake in the evening, who will not pair them, and who will skip the yogurt drops can do well. The questions already say fights are sudden and a pair with scars has already failed. If you attempt a same-sex pair from a young age, a second full cage has to be ready that night. Children get bitten and then the hamster gets labeled mean. Other pets do not share the enclosure. A dog in the house means the lid latches. They are a poor match for a classroom that needs an animal at 10 a.m.
Before you buy
Ask whether the hamster is Campbell's, winter white, or a hybrid. Expect a guess, and believe a winter molt or a very gray coat more than the sign. Eyes should be equal and open, the rear dry, the teeth lined up, the belly not soaked. Watch it drink. A hamster already draining a bottle in the shop may be diabetic. Leave that animal. The cage at home should already be at least 450 square inches, with the wheel and the sand in it, before the animal rides home in a cardboard box that it can chew through in an hour.
Campbell's dwarf hamster questions
Are Campbell's hamsters social?
They can live with their own kind and they often should not. Fights are sudden. A solitary Campbell's in a large cage is a fair life. A pair with scars has already failed.
Do they get diabetes?
The species is prone to it, especially on sweet or fatty seed. A hamster that drinks constantly and loses weight needs a vet. Take the yogurt chips out of the diet tonight.
How do they differ from winter whites?
Campbell's are stockier, often with a dorsal stripe, and they do not turn white in winter. Pet shops mix the names and sell hybrids. Ask, and expect a guess.
How big a cage does a Campbell's dwarf hamster need?
At least 450 square inches of floor, and a 40-gallon breeder is the size that fits an 8-inch solid wheel, a sand bath, and deep bedding. Bar gaps stay at or under a quarter inch.
Can Campbell's hamsters live in California or Hawaii?
Title 14 in California says domesticated Phodopus are not restricted, while the posted text of Fish and Game Code 2118 names Syrian hamsters and skips the dwarf line. Ask CDFW before a move. Hawaii prohibits hamsters for private possession.
What does a diabetes-prone hamster eat?
About a teaspoon of pellet a day and a thumbnail of plain vegetable a few times a week. Yogurt drops and honey sticks are the foods to stop. Constant drinking and weight loss need a veterinarian the same day. Any insulin decision belongs to that visit.
