Panther Chameleon Habitat Essentials
These three parameters — temperature, humidity, cleanliness — are coupled, and adjusting one in isolation is a common source of downstream problems.
Color is the locale, not a mood ring you can trust
Panther chameleons, Furcifer pardalis, are Madagascan lizards of about 12 to 20 inches with the tail. Males are the painted ones. Females are smaller and usually muted. Lifespan is about 5 to 7 years. Ambilobe, Nosy Be, and the other locale names describe breeding lines with different male colors. They are not separate care sheets. A dull, dark male on the cage floor is sick or cold. A bright male who turns dull when you reach in is annoyed. Learn the difference by watching the animal at rest, not by handling it until it performs.
Care level is advanced. Temperature about 72 to 85°F with a warmer basking branch, humidity 50 to 70 percent with airflow, and a screen cage around 2 by 2 by 4 feet. Glass tanks stagnate. They will not reliably drink from a bowl. Drip or mist, then let the cage dry. Insects, well fed and dusted, are the diet. No roommate.
Short life, fast decline
Eyes closed by day, a sunken casque, and missed meals are the emergency picture. Metabolic bone disease shows up as a wavy jaw and weak grip when UVB and calcium were skipped. Females can bind eggs. Why do panther chameleon colors vary so much?
Males from different Madagascar locales, such as Ambilobe and Nosy Be, wear different palettes. A washed-out male is not a locale. Stress, cold, and illness also dull the color. Ask the breeder which line, and look at the parents.
Are panther chameleons beginner reptiles?
Care is advanced. Screen cage, UVB, a real drinking method, and a short lifespan are the job. A first reptile should not be this one.
How long do they live?
About 5 to 7 years in captivity. That is the animal. A seller promising a decade is selling a calendar the species does not keep.
