Box Turtle Habitat Essentials

The dollars that matter go to the essentials — heating, diet, enclosure quality — not to the Instagram-friendly accessories.

Several turtles, one common name

Box turtle in a shop can mean an eastern box turtle, a three-toed, a Gulf Coast, a Florida, or an ornate. All are Terrapene. Common pets land around 5 to 7 inches and 30 to 50 years or more. A hinged shell that closes is the shared trick. The moisture they need is not shared. Ornate box turtles want a drier pen than a three-toed from a wet woodland.

They eat insects, worms, greens, and a little fruit. They really are omnivores. Dog food as the whole diet makes them fat and sick. Offer calcium, UVB or outdoor sun, and temperatures from about 70 to 85°F with a warmer bask. Humidity of 60 to 80 percent fits the woodland species. Drop it for an ornate, which has its own page and a drier range.

A pen on the ground, and a legal animal

A 4 by 2 foot indoor box is the minimum listed. An outdoor pen with shade, a moist burrow, and walls sunk into the soil is the setup these turtles actually use. They are escape artists and they overheat in a glass tank in the sun. Care level is intermediate because of the lifespan and the species mix, not because they are aggressive.

Wild box turtles are protected in many states. A turtle from the roadside belongs on the roadside, headed the way it was going. Captive-bred only. Swollen eyes, a soft shell, or a turtle that will not eat is a case for a reptile vet via ARAV.

Box turtle questions

Which box turtle is this page about?

Several. Eastern, three-toed, Gulf Coast, Florida, and ornate box turtles are all sold under the short name. Humidity and winter care are not the same for each.

Can I keep a box turtle I found outside?

In much of the United States it is illegal to take a wild box turtle home. Wild animals also carry parasites and often fail in a tank. Look for a captive-bred turtle with papers.

Do box turtles need water?

They are not pond turtles. They need a shallow dish they can soak in and climb out of, plus damp soil for burrowing. Deep water is a drowning risk.
