Ackie Monitor Habitat Essentials
These three parameters — temperature, humidity, cleanliness — are coupled, and adjusting one in isolation is a common source of downstream problems.
The small monitor with a large build
Ackies, Varanus acanthurus, are Australian ridge-tailed monitors about 24 to 28 inches long, tail included. Lifespan is about 15 to 20 years. They are the monitor most often suggested to a keeper who wants a lizard that uses its brain and still fits in a house. The cage does not shrink with the reputation. Adults need about 4 by 2 by 2 feet, a foot or more of substrate they can burrow in, stacked cork, and a basking rock hot enough that the surface reads well over 120°F while a burrow stays humid and cool. Air temperature in the 80s on the warm side is not the same number as that rock.
Humidity in the air can sit around 40 to 60 percent if the burrows are damp. A bone-dry cage and a water bowl in the corner is how they dehydrate. UVB over the bask is worth installing.
Insects, and a lot of them
Diet is insects and other small prey: roaches, crickets, and the occasional egg. Rodents as a habit make them fat. Dust calcium. They are inquisitive and will learn the feeding tongs. Toes and tail tips shed stuck if the burrow dried out. A monitor that stops eating, swells at the joints, or breathes with its neck extended needs a vet who has seen varanids, not a dog clinic guessing.
ARAV is the directory. The not-eating page and the checker cover the decision to go in.
Ackie monitor questions
Are ackie monitors beginner lizards?
Care is intermediate. They are the small monitor people recommend first, and the setup is still a 4-foot cage, deep dirt, and a basking surface that can pass 130°F. That is not a gecko kit.
How hot should the basking spot be?
Surface temperature where they bask often needs to reach well above 120°F, sometimes near 140 to 150°F on the rock, with a much cooler retreat. Measure the surface, not the air in the middle of the room. A thermostat is mandatory.
Do they like to be handled?
Many become confident and will climb a familiar person. That takes time and a feeding routine. A new ackie that is chased around the cage learns to sprint, not to sit.
