A small spitz with a contract

Shiba inu stand about 13.5 to 16.5 inches and weigh roughly 17 to 23 pounds. Lifespan is often 13 to 16 years. They are fastidious, relatively quiet in the house, and intensely independent. Training works when it is a trade. It fails when it is a command shouted from a couch. The coat blows twice a year in a cloud that fills a vacuum.

They can be good with older children who respect a dog that will leave. They are a bad idea for a home that wants a dog to tolerate every visiting child and every dog on the sidewalk. Cats in the house are a predation problem unless the Shiba was raised with them and still might fail.

Allergies, eyes, and a locked gate

Atopy, patellar luxation, glaucoma, and cataracts are the health items worth asking a breeder about. Hip scores matter less than in a giant breed and are not zero. A Shiba that rubs its face raw may have allergies, and a food trial is a vet plan rather than a bag you picked because the label said salmon. VCA describes atopic dermatitis. Face rubbing and red skin are the itching guide.

Shiba inu questions

What is the Shiba scream?

A high, startling yell when the dog is restrained, bathed, or told no. It sounds like an injury. Check that nothing is actually wrong, then do not reward the scream by letting the dog win the nail trim.

Do they get along with other dogs?

Many do not, especially same-sex adults. Early socialization helps and does not rewrite the breed. A Shiba that stares and stiffens at the dog park should leave the dog park.

Are they escape artists?

Yes. They climb, they dig, and they slip collars. A fence needs a dig barrier and a lock. Recall is unreliable off leash even in a trained Shiba.
