Heels, then the rest of the day

Australian Cattle Dogs weigh about 35 to 50 pounds and stand 17 to 20 inches. Lifespan is often 12 to 16 years, which is long if the dog has a job and short on everyone's patience if it does not. They were built to bite low and duck a kick. In a suburb that becomes nipping the children and chewing the door frame. Exercise on the stats table is very high, two hours and up, and it has to include training or the dog invents a worse sport. Other dogs can be a dominance contest. Same does not mean friendly.

The coat sheds on a seasonal timer. Grooming is not the bill. Boredom is.

Hearing, sight, joints

Puppies with excessive white are the ones to BAER-test before you discover deafness as "stubborn." Progressive retinal atrophy is a known fade of vision; night blindness is the early clue, and DNA testing exists in the breed. Hips and osteochondritis dissecans explain some of the persistent lameness in a dog that hurls itself at work. Keep them lean. A heeler at a healthy weight still has opinions. A heavy one has opinions and a bad knee.

A routine year often totals about $1,600 to $3,400, with activities as a real line item. The AKC breed list will describe the look. It will not tire the dog out. A limp uses the limping guide. A dog that seems lost in the yard or startles at nothing uses the checker if you are unsure whether the eyes or the ears have changed.

Cattle dog questions

Do Australian Cattle Dogs nip children?

They nip what they are trying to move. Children, bikes, and the cat qualify. You can train a cutoff. You cannot buy a heeler and then be surprised that herding shows up.

Why test hearing and eyes?

Congenital deafness is more likely when there is a lot of white, and progressive retinal atrophy can steal sight later. BAER testing and an eye or DNA result are specific questions. A clap in the kitchen is not a hearing test.

Is a Cattle Dog a good first dog?

The stats table says excellent trainability for experienced handlers. That qualifier is the whole review. A first dog that is smarter than the household routine will run the household.
