Strong, people-oriented, and not automatic
American Staffordshire terriers stand about 17 to 19 inches and weigh 40 to 70 pounds. Lifespan is often 12 to 16 years when the dog stays lean and out of fights. They are confident and usually devoted to their own family. "Good with kids when properly raised" means supervised, trained, and never left to manage a children's party. It does not mean the breed cannot bite.
Exercise is real: walks, tug with rules, and training. A bored, under-exercised AmStaff is a destruction project. Skin allergies are common. Crates and fences have to be actual containment, because these dogs are athletic.
Heart, hips, and a DNA test for ataxia
Hip dysplasia, allergies, and heart defects are the screening talk. Cerebellar ataxia is inherited and testable. Demodectic mange shows up in some young dogs and needs a vet, not a gasoline folk cure. AKC's breed list is a description, not a landlord's approval. Itching that will not quit is the itching page.
American Staffordshire terrier questions
Is an AmStaff a pit bull?
Shelters and laws often use pit bull for several related breeds. The AKC American Staffordshire terrier is one specific breed. Insurance and housing rules may not care about the paper. Read the policy before you fall in love with a puppy.
Are they good with other dogs?
Variable. Some are social. Many are not, especially as adults. Dog parks are a bad test. A controlled introduction and the option to leave are the plan.
What heart disease do they get?
Ask about congenital heart disease and about cerebellar ataxia, which is a DNA test in the breed. A puppy that bunny-hops or seems uncoordinated needs a neurologist, not more exercise.
