A serval in the pedigree, a cat in the kitchen
Savannahs weigh roughly 12 to 25 pounds depending on generation, and the quoted life is 12 to 20 years. Early generations are larger, leggier, and more like a small wild cat that opens every door. Later generations can live more like a busy domestic cat and still jump to the top of a door. Activity is very high. A standard cat tree is a toy, not the housing.
They bond hard with their people and many do poorly when rehomed on a whim. Other pets are a case-by-case risk, especially small ones. Leash walks are a hobby for some of them and a fight for others. Do not buy one to impress a guest.
Law, fertility, and a normal cat vaccine visit
Early-generation males are often sterile. That is biology, not a defect you supplement away. There is no special vaccine protocol to invent at home. Use a vet who has seen hybrids and who will not sedate a fractious cat as the first idea. TICA registers some Savannahs and does not override your city's animal law. A hybrid that stops eating is still the not-eating page, and it still becomes urgent faster than an owner expects.
Savannah cat questions
What does F1 mean?
An F1 is a first-generation hybrid, one parent a serval. Later generations (F5 and beyond) are further from the serval. Size, temperament, fertility, and the law can all change with that number. Ask which generation is in the carrier.
Are they legal?
Not everywhere. Some states and cities restrict early-generation hybrids. A seller who will ship anyway does not make possession legal where you live. Check before you pay.
How much do early generations cost?
An F1 is often in the range of $12,000 to $20,000, and that number moves. Later generations cost less and are still not a shelter cat. The purchase price is the small line on a tall enclosure and a lifetime of high activity.
