No tail is not a party trick
Manx cats weigh about 8 to 12 pounds. Lifespan is often quoted at 8 to 14 years, and the low end of that range includes cats with spinal disease. They are playful and moderate in activity. The hind end is rounded and the jump is powerful when the spine is sound. A Manx that bunny-hops or leaks urine is not "just the breed being funny."
They can be good with children and other pets. The coat is short to medium. Grooming is ordinary. The extraordinary part is the litter box: some affected cats cannot feel when they are soiling themselves. That is a medical and a welfare problem, and it is a reason to ask a breeder how they select breeding cats.
Bowels, bladder, and the spine
Constipation, megacolon, and urinary incontinence are the daily face of Manx syndrome. Severe cases are a quality-of-life conversation, not a supplement aisle. A cat that strains in the box may be blocked, constipated, or neurologically unable to empty. Merck discusses spinal malformations. Straining is the urinary page and a same-day visit if nothing is produced.
Manx questions
Are all Manx tailless?
No. Rumpies have no tail. Stumpies and longy Manx have some tail. The mutation is a spectrum, and the most tailless cats are the ones most at risk of Manx syndrome.
What is Manx syndrome?
Spina bifida and related defects: a hopping gait, incontinence, constipation, and in severe kittens a short life. A Manx that cannot control its bladder needs a vet, not a bigger litter box as the cure.
Are they doglike?
Some follow their people and play fetch. That is a pleasant individual, not a guarantee, and it does not cancel the spinal risk.
