Calmer than an Amazon, and still a long-lived parrot
Pionus are stocky parrots, about 10 to 12 inches and 200 to 280 grams, often living 25 to 40 years. They are calmer and quieter than the famous talking parrots, and they are still parrots. A cage of at least 24 by 24 by 30 inches is a start. They need hours out, a shower, and a diet of pellets and vegetables rather than a sunflower habit. A stressed or excited pionus can smell musky, and that scent fades when the bird settles. It is a breed quirk, not a dirty cage, and it is not a reason to ignore a bird that is fluffed or losing weight.
Talking is moderate. A pionus that never speaks is normal. A pionus that screams all evening may be bored, hormonal, or under-slept. Twelve hours of dark, quiet night fixes more parrots than another toy.
The snuffle versus the sick bird
Learn the excited snuffle so you do not rush a healthy bird to a clinic, and so you do not ignore a real infection because someone online said pionus always wheeze. Weight loss is the fact that settles the argument. AAV lists avian vets. A bird that stays fluffed belongs on the quiet bird page.
Pionus questions
Why does my pionus sound stuffy?
Many pionus make a snuffling sound when they are excited or alarmed. It can be normal. Labored breathing, a tail bob at rest, or a bird that is fluffed and quiet is not that sound. That bird needs a vet.
Are they good apartment birds?
Better than a macaw or a sun conure. They still call. An apartment can work if you are home and the neighbors are not sharing a paper wall.
Which pionus is this?
Eight species share the genus. Blue-headed, white-capped, bronze-winged, and dusky are not the same size or the same price. Ask for the species on the receipt.
