A long tail and a clear voice

Indian ringneck parakeets are Psittacula krameri manillensis. Adults measure about 14 to 17 inches because the tail is long, on a body that is still a medium parrot. They often live 25 to 30 years or more, care is intermediate, and talking is excellent. They are famous for speech. They are also famous for a sharp puberty. A sweet baby can become a biter at one to two years. That is the species, and it improves if you keep training through it instead of stuffing the bird in a back room.

Give a tall cage, at least 24 by 24 by 36 inches, so the tail clears the floor when the bird sits up. Pellets, vegetables, fruit, and sprouted seed are the diet. They are less needy of constant cuddling than a cockatoo and still need daily time out of the cage. Check local rules before you buy. A few places restrict Psittacula.

Talking practice, and a vet

Short sessions beat a bird that screams the phrase you repeated once. Have an avian clinic from AAV for beak, feather, and reproductive questions. A ringneck that stops talking and sits fluffed is a medical bird first. The quiet bird page is the pattern to compare.

Indian ringneck questions

When does the neck ring appear?

Mature males develop the black and rose ring. Hens and young males do not have it. A bird without a ring is not automatically female.

Do Indian ringnecks talk?

Talking is excellent, and a clear vocabulary is realistic. They also scream. A talking ringneck is not a quiet ringneck.

Why does the cage have to be tall?

The tail is a large part of the 14 to 17 inch length. A short finch cage breaks tail feathers. Give them at least 24 by 24 by 36 inches.
